What are cataracts?
A cataract is a hardening or clouding of the lens of your eye (the clear part of the eye that helps to focus light). Cataracts are very common as you get older. This can occur at any age due to medical conditions of the body. The majority of the surgeries are done mid 50s and older.
Cataract surgery or operation can be performed at any stage of cataract development as long as the vision is affecting your day to day activities of life, driving, eating, reading, watching TV, art work, glare or halo issues, just to name a few. There is no need to wait until your cataract is “ripe” before removing it. Most insurances cover Cataract surgery including the basic monofocal lens.
A lens can be removed at earlier stage before a cataract formation by a clear lens extraction. For more information on this surgery, contact our office and set up an appointment.
Cataracts do not come back.
There are three different types of intraocular lenses available including monofocal, toric, and presbyopic-correcting.
- Monofocal lenses - correct your vision distance or near, drive without glasses but wear glasses for close up work or read or near vision and wear glasses for distance. If you have astigmatism, you will still need bifocal, trifocal or progressive glasses.
- Toric lenses - reduce astigmatism to help improve the vision, distance or near.
- Presbyopia-correcting lenses - (also called multi-focal (PanOptix) or extended depth-of-focus (Vivity) lenses) correct both distance and near vision. For many people, this means less need for distance glasses and reading glasses after cataract surgery. There are times glasses may still be needed.
